I have been lying up in this bed for weeks now, but there has been progress. I can now feel a little on my left side, but I lost complete vision in my right eye. I was also able to mumble some words, but they weren’t as coherent as I thought. Since I was right handed, I was able to communicate by writing down my thoughts.

Things were starting to progress a little between Garrick and me. First, he brought my children around to see me. My girls were happy to see me but my son, Donovan was anything but receptive. The cold stares that he gave me brought chills down my spine.

Hey son. I love you and I am sorry for every bit of pain that I caused in your life, I wrote down on the notebook that I used to communicate with.

“Yeah, Mom, I hear you. I love you too. Just get better.” His answers were short and borderline rude. I guess Garrick could sense it too because he spoke up.

“Boy what is wrong with you? That’s your mother you’re talking to. I don’t care if she was Charles Manson laying there, you will show some respect.”

“Man she didn’t respect you, Gramma, Aunt Lucia or Uncle Max when she did what she did. She didn’t care anything about us when she killed a man and made me leave school. All the kids in the neighborhood call us the Crazy Christians now because of her. I hate her!”

“Son you know you don’t mean that.” Garrick reached over and tried to comfort him, but Donovan snatched away from him.

“No, I do mean that. She couldn’t just go away. She had to make things worse. All the kids from school said she was crazy. Even the people at church saw it. They said she tried too hard to be perfect and people like that got something to hide.”

I had no idea that my son was dealing with all of this. He was only twelve and should be thinking about preteen things like his Xbox or the new pair of Jordans and SOLs, but not go through the bullying from the neighborhood kids and especially not the church members. I looked at Garrick and he knew exactly what to say to our angry son.

“Donovan we raised you to believe in the power of God. There were things going on with your mom that no one knew about. Mental illness is real and she never knew that she was suffering from it. Do you remember the talk we had on generational curses?” My son nodded as Garrick continued.

“We know that certain things get passed on to us so that we can get a better understanding on why these things happened to those before us, and we can make the changes to not repeat the cycle. Unfortunately, your mother’s mental state is one of those generational curses. She is trying to get the help she needs. But the devil almost got his way.

“She has been getting better, but sometimes we fall short.
